The idea that Juiceboxxx’s sound is reminiscent to the love child of the Beastie Boys, early punk fueled hip-hop, the idiosyncrasies of Beck’s Mellow Gold and Odelay, and a sprinkle of the aggressiveness and underground messaging of Public Enemy’s heyday is not entirely lost on the Milwaukee-bred rapper. “I’m putting together these pieces in a way I find interesting as a contemporary record, and not conforming to any trends of the moment,” Juiceboxxx says. “I’m looking at Beastie Boys as the Ramones or something, and trying to build on that language; looking at Public Enemy within the lens of punk rock.”
These call outs are definitely apparent on first listen of Juiceboxxx’s Freaking Out, originally premiered by The Fader and from his forthcoming LP, Freaked Out American Loser. Further listens, however, provide a deeper dive into what it means to have grown up through the maturation of the different sounds of hip hop, punk rock, and noise and distilling those experiences through a modern lens and truly artistic living. Juiceboxxxx states, “It is also just my attempt to make a high energy rap song with some real nerve… I’ve been doing music my whole life. The real ones are in this regardless of trends or the international attention economy or really anything.”
To dismiss this track as the next ‘punk-rap’ amalgamation amongst a sea of fly by nights trying to get a nut would be folly. Give it a quick earshot and harken back to the days when creative ideas and outbursts were the norm and think… this is all going to happen again.
