Fifty years ago, musician and Grass Valley resident, Peter Blachley had just embarked on a journey as a young soldier with orders to Vietnam. As the Military Airlift Command TWA 707 descended over the Mekong Delta on that June 1967 morning, Blachley gazed out the window at a bomb ravaged landscape while the headsets he was wearing played Scott McKenzie’s “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair).” 
“That image and song has always stayed with me over the years because it was such a dichotomy, but at the same time the Vietnam War had this ongoing soundtrack reflected in the music of that time,” says Blachley, who currently lives in Grass Valley California with his wife Susan. Blachley spent many years at Capitol Records in Los Angeles and in 2001 founded the Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City along with his longtime friend, business partner and acclaimed music photographer, Henry Diltz.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of 1967, Morrison Hotel Gallery and The Alexander Gallery will host a music film festival, Veterans benefit, and photography exhibition and sale. Morrison Hotel Gallery, the world leader in fine art music photography with The Alexander Gallery of classical and contemporary art, aim to bring the memories and energy behind the summer of 1967 into the summer of 2017 while raising money for a local military veterans’ program, Image Nation, a joint project of Nevada County Arts Council and Welcome Home Vets.

VIP tickets holders will be treated to a private reception at The Alexander Gallery in historic Nevada City, California.  The VIP experience includes a behind-the-scenes photographic tour hosted by Morrison Hotel Gallery co-founders Peter Blachley and legendary rock n roll photographer Henry Diltz of the Peace, Love and War – The Sights and Sounds of ’67 exhibit. This show includes remarkable framed limited edition prints of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Doors, and other music luminaries from the archives of the Morrison Hotel Gallery.
 Following the private reception will be a double-feature screening for VIP and general public seating of the documentary UNDER THE COVERS, a film produced by Blachley about his friend Diltz. It tells Diltz’s stories behind the iconic album cover photographs he has taken for music legends James Taylor, Jackson Browne, The Doors, America, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Neil Young, and the Eagles, among others. The second screening, also presented by Diltz who was the official photographer of Monterey Pop and later Woodstock ’69, will be the newly-remastered MONTEREY POP concert film by D.A. Pennebaker. The film, a first-person perspective of the landmark California music festival that saw historic performances from icons like Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and Janis Joplin in 1967.

Sunday, August 13th – DAY 2 of Peace, Love and War – The Sights and Sounds of ’67
1:30 PM to 4PM
Hosted by Blachley and Special Guests, this double-feature film screening benefits Image Nation, a project of Nevada County Arts Council’s that offers veterans an opportunity to tell their stories and connect to the community through photography. The first film, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, explores the mental health issues that plague veterans once they return home from the dangers of the battlefield. The New York Times deemed the film “important” while The Hollywood Reporter said, “If this film can’t spur politicians to act, nothing will.” The second film in the benefit screening will be the newly-remastered MONTEREY POP concert film by D.A. Pennebaker.

Image Nation is a program of Nevada County Arts Council and Welcome Home Vets that draws together veterans and the community through photography. The program is based on the belief that an integral element for the successful and healthy return of a veteran is the opportunity, when ready, to explore and share his or her story to a listening community. Image Nation allows participating veterans to tell their stories to a large audience through the unique and powerful visual medium of photography.
Led by award-winning photographer, Michael Llewellen, participants attended classes and workshops, and then were sent out on assignment to document their world-views through the camera’s eye.
